While a slight difference in breast size is common among most women, breast size discrepancy in some women can be marked.

A woman's breasts can be different not only in size but also in shape. The position of the nipple can also be quite different in each breast.

If surgical correction of breast asymmetry is chosen, success is best achieved with the correction of breast size. If both breast size and shape are different, it will be more difficult to achieve a good surgical result since a different breast surgery procedure must be used for each breast.

If the difference in breast size is less than a bra cup size, then surgical intervention not unusually recommended.

If, however, one breast is a cup size or more different that the other, surgical correction will likely be recommended.

In terms of patient satisfaction, breast surgery to correct asymmetry is about 90% successful.

Breast size and shape is genetic to large extent though asymmetry breast can occur randomly. Breasts begin to grow at puberty and continue to grow for another 2-4 years afterwards. It is during this phase that a difference in size can become apparent. If breasts are uneven at age 21 it is unlikely that their size and shape will change or improve significantly after that time.

Most surgeons prefer not to perform breast surgery for asymmetry on patients younger than 18. In any case, breast surgery within the first 2 years of the onset of menstruation is not recommended unless a significant difference in the size of the breasts is a source of emotional distress.

Surgery for breast asymmetry may require:

If there is sagging (ptosis) of one of the asymmetrical breasts, this can also be corrected during surgery for breast asymmetry. A breast lift or mastopexy procedure will be used to raise the sagging breast.

Another breast anomaly akin to breast asymmetry is a condition known as tuberous breasts.

Tuberous breasts are so named because the breasts are shaped like tubes. With tuberous breasts, the base of the breast is constricted so that the breast appears more like a tube than a cone. Tuberous breasts can also be corrected with cosmetic plastic surgery.
