Breast Implants: Incision Options

Fairfield County and Norwalk, Connecticut

If you are considering enhancing your appearance with breast augmentation through implants, you may have questions about the incisions that will be made during surgery. You may be concerned about the scars you will have after your procedure. As with all surgery, the placement of breast implants requires that incisions be made in the skin, through which the implants will be inserted and positioned, either over or under your chest muscles. After your implants are in place, the surgeon closes these incisions with surgical stitches (sutures) or surgical tape. After your incisions heal, you may need to have your sutures removed in the doctor’s office, or your sutures may dissolve slowly inside your body.

The size and location of the incisions (and thus, the kind of scars you will have) depend on your body, the type, size and shape of your implants, and how much enlargement is being done. For example, silicone implants generally require longer incisions because they are full-size when inserted, whereas saline implants are flat when inserted, then filled later. The best way to learn about your incision options, and to explore your expectations and concerns about breast implants, is to schedule a consultation with Dr. Rick Rosen.

Incision Options

The following are typical locations of incisions for breast implants:

  • Under the breast (inframammary) – follows the crease between the underside of the breast and the chest
  • Under the arm (axillary) – in the armpit
  • Around the nipple (periaureolar) – follows the natural border of the aureola, the dark skin around the nipple

The periaureolar incision may leave you with the least noticeable scar. However, it might also decrease sensation in your nipple, or hamper your ability to breastfeed.
