If you are satisfied with the size of your breasts but wish to restore a more youthful contour, you may be a candidate for breast lift. If you have lost a considerable amount of volume in your breasts you may also want to consider having breast implants inserted at the time of breast lift surgery. Dr. Rick Rosen performs breast lift and breast reduction surgery for patients in Fairfield County, Norwalk, Westport, Weston, Darien, New Canaan, New Haven, Fairfield, Stamford, Greenwich, Bridgeport, and Westchester County.
Breast reduction, a similar procedure, can offer relief from the discomfort caused by excessively large breasts. The procedure can provide relief from back, shoulder and neck discomfort caused by large breasts. At the same time a more proportional look to the overall body image can be achieved.
While breast lift or breast reduction can be performed at any age it is recommended that the procedure be undertaken only when breast development has stopped. Childbirth and breast-feeding can have a significant effect on the size and shape of your breasts.
In assessing you as a candidate for breast lift or breast reduction, Dr. Rosen will carefully check the size and shape of your breasts, the quality of your skin, and the placement of the nipples and areolas. If you are overweight, Dr. Rosen may suggest that you stabilize your weight before having surgery.
There are many variations to the incisions used for breast lift or reduction. The traditional method of breast reduction uses 3 incisions: one around the nipple areolar complex, the second vertically from the bottom edge of the areola to the crease under the breast and the third along the natural curve of the breast crease. The nipple complex stays attached to a central pedicle of the breast tissue and repositioned at a higher level. Excessive breast tissue may be removed until the desired size is achieved. The final size determination is made together with Dr. Rosen at the consultation or preoperative visit. Sometimes, the horizontal or vertical scar may be avoided.
The procedure is usually performed as an outpatient at a hospital or surgical center. An overnight stay may also be recommended depending on certain factors. Depending on the size of your breasts and the technique chosen, the procedure typically takes 3-4 hours. Following the procedure you will be following this procedure to be minimal to moderate.
Postoperatively, showering is permitted after two days, and most women may return to work after 5-7 days. A return to full sports activities within a month is the norm. The majority of sutures are internal self dissolving sutures. This minimizes postoperative discomfort and improves scarring. Steri-Strip support of the incisions is continued to improve scarring. The incision takes approximately one year to fade.
Complications do occur but fortunately are not frequent. At your consultation and preoperative visit these will be discussed. Studies have shown that Breast lift and breast reduction patients are the most satisfied patients. The relief in discomfort and improvement in body image have achieved that goal.
Insurance coverage may be able to be obtained for this procedure, but each insurance carrier’s rules are different. You may wish to contact your carrier before the consultation to find out their requirements. The staff at the office will be able to assist you with this after your consultation.
