Liposuction: Is it Right for Me?

Liposuction is the removal of fat from the body by suction. Also called lipoplasty or simply lipo, it is used to reshape and improve the body’s contours. While liposuction is not a weight loss tool, it can vastly enhance the appearance, especially in areas where fat accumulates despite maintaining a healthy weight, eating a healthy diet, and exercising.  Sometimes liposuction is done to maximize the benefits of other cosmetic procedures, such as a tummy tuck, face-lift, or breast reduction.

What is Lipo?

Liposuction is usually an outpatient procedure, often done under local anesthesia with or without sedation. Tiny incisions are made in the skin, and a thin tube or cannula is inserted. As the tube is moved around gently, it targets fatty deposits and sucks the fat out. Sometimes a sterile solution containing anesthetic is injected into the target area first to allow the tube to move more smoothly and to reduce blood loss. And sometimes ultrasound or a laser is used to liquefy the fat before it is removed.

Most people are up and moving around as soon as the anesthetic and/or sedative wear off, and most return to work within a few days. The treated part(s) of your body will be firmly wrapped after lipo to reduce pain, swelling and bruising. You will need to wear compression garment or elastic bandages for a few weeks as you recover from lipo.
