Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty)

Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty)

An abdominoplasty or tummy tuck is a procedure used to correct the excess skin and fatty folds which occur on your abdomen secondary to weight loss or pregnancy. It will enhance your shape by making your abdomen flatter and firmer.

Dr. Rosen performs tummy tuck surgery for patients in Fairfield County, Norwalk, Westport, Weston, Darien, New Canaan, New Haven, Fairfield, Stamford, Greenwich, Bridgeport, and Westchester County.

Prior to tummy tuck surgery, Dr. Rosen will assess how much excess fat and loose skin you have in your abdomen as well as the condition of your stomach muscles.

The standard tummy tuck incision is made above the pubic area extends in a horizontal line toward the pelvic bones. Effort is always taken to keep the incision covered by a bathing suit or undergarment.

There are several approaches to this procedure depending upon the amount of skin and fat to be removed. Because there are several possible approaches that can be used for this surgery, Dr. Rosen will talk to you about the method he feels will achieve the best result in your case. Some patients may benefit from a modified procedure where only the lower abdomen is corrected. Some patients may benefit from liposuction alone. Liposuction will help correct excessive collections of fatty tissue. It will not help correct laxity of skin or weakness in the abdominal wall secondary to the stretching of pregnancy.

The tummy tuck procedure takes approximately 2-3 hours. It may be performed in the office or hospital, based on the technique decided upon at your consultation with Dr. Rosen.

You will be given a support garment to wear for several weeks and you should not sit for long periods in the week after your surgery.

While bruising and swelling disappear over a few weeks, numbness in some areas of the abdomen may persist for several months.

Scars will be deep in color for some time following tummy tuck surgery and will likely always be visible. In some cases, scars eventually fade to very faint lines.

Complications fortunately are not frequent and most patients are quite pleased with the results. Tummy tuck surgery may be performed at the same time as other procedures i.e. liposuction or breast surgery.
