Breast Augmentation:
What is the Right Breast Size for Me?
Fairfield County and Norwalk, Connecticut
If you are considering breast augmentation, you may be wondering how to decide how much breast enlargement you want. Your breast augmentation surgeon will be able to help you explore your options, based on his own experience. What kind of implants (silicone vs. saline) is right for you? What is the ideal implant shape and texture for the results you want? Should the implants be placed above or below the chest muscle? How big should be implants be (i.e., what volume) to achieve the results you want? An experienced surgeon will make knowledgeable recommendations to help you achieve the soft, natural look you want.
As you Plan for Breast Augmentation
It helps if your surgeon has as much information as possible during the planning stage. During your consultation, the surgeon might want to see photos of you, both straight-on and in profile, and preferably in the nude. He will want to measure your chest, ribcage, and breast dimensions, and check height, weight, and other physical factors.
Physical Factors to Consider With Breast Augmentation
- Chest shape
- Rib size
- Breast shape
- Breast base dimension
- Breast volume
- Breast width
- Tissue stretch characteristics
- Sternal depth
- History of pregnancy
Discuss your expectations with your surgeon. Do you want cleavage, and how much? You may want to bring along photos clipped from magazines or other sources showing breasts that you think are too big, not big enough, and just the right size. Ask your surgeon if his office has computer enhancement capabilities so you can “see” how your new breasts might look. You should also ask to see before and after photos of the surgeon’s work.
Test at Home
One good way to think about how much increase in breast size (or bra size) will be right for you is to try out different sizes of “spacer” in your bra, checking the results in a mirror. Do this both with and without clothes, so you can see the total effect. An easy way to make spacers of different sizes is to put pre-measured rice (or bird seed) into the ends of panty hose, before inserting into your bra cup. To enlarge the spacers, simply add more rice. A sports bra may give the most realistic look, especially if your implants will be under the chest muscle.
