New innovations have improved the recovery period for tummy tuck surgery.

Now that we have more advanced technology, even more precise surgical skills, and extensive guidelines on how to have a more comfortable recovery, tummy tuck surgery is more comfortable and popular than ever before.

Pain Relief

There are two revolutionary inventions that decrease tummy tuck recovery discomfort.

ON-Q* System

The ON-Q* pain pump is a self-regulating device that releases a small amount of a long-acting novocaine solution for about three days postoperatively.

EXPAREL®

EXPAREL® is a long-acting novocaine solution that is injected into the surgical area in the operating room.

These two pain-reducing products have made the early postoperative period much more tolerable for most patients.

What Should I Expect After My Tummy Tuck?

Following your procedure, you are put into a binder that should be worn for about five to six days. Then you are switched to a girdle for about one week and then changed into a garment or SPANX® for about a month (usually four to six weeks).

Recovery Timeline After Tummy Tuck Surgery

Most patients need about 10 days off from work, which usually works out to be one week off, including the weekends before and after. Normal energy levels do not return for about one month.

Some patients can start walking for exercise after three weeks. No twisting, inclines, or abdomen exercises are allowed for at least 8 to 12 weeks following surgery.

All the sutures are self-dissolving. The scars fade nicely over time and can have silicone gel products or laser treatments to help scarring fade sooner.

How Can I Heal Quicker?

Every patient heals at a different rate, but specific actions can improve or adversely affect your recuperation. Below are some healing tips to help you on your way to recovery:

  1. Follow all of your surgeon’s postoperative care instructions.
  2. Get plenty of rest and relax while you recover.
  3. Set up a comfortable area to recover in. This can include pillows, blankets, entertainment, and anything else to ease your discomfort.
  4. Have all of your prescriptions filled before arriving home after your tummy tuck.
  5. Do not overdo exercising. Keep it light and mild.

Selecting Your Surgeon

As with any surgical procedure, optimal results are vital. Dr. Rick Rosen is a board-certified plastic surgeon with over 30 years of cosmetic surgery experience.

You should feel comfortable and confident with your surgeon’s abilities. Discuss any questions or concerns you may have, along with expressing your aesthetic goals and desired outcome.
