What Can I Do About My Neck?
I get asked this a lot in the office. A beautiful neckline is important for a youthful appearance. A non surgical option is commonly searched for. The answer I give is based on the amount of laxity present in the neck. I wish there was a magic wand to tighten the neck, but we are not there yet.
The non surgical modalities that are out there are too inconsistent with not enough correction, and are quite expensive. These include Thermage, Ultherapy, Fractionated Lasers, and minimally invasive Radio Frequency to name a few. I am not a believer in the thread lift or quick fix procedures. These typically give minimal results. You can perform a Controlled Depth Peel in the face to achieve tightening, but can not use it in the neck region as that area is not as tolerant to the tightening agents. If there is minimal laxity, then one of the above may temporize things for a short period, but are not cheap.
A well performed neck lift will achieve the goal, and leave a longer lasting result. The scars are well hidden, with approximately a week down time and minimal discomfort. This consists of removing excess fat that may be present as well as tightening any muscle bands and the skin. A natural pleasing improvement is achieved. It does not have to continue upwards to tighten the cheek area unless desired, but improves the jaw line and neck.
There are major marketing efforts for these newer technologies, but I frequently see patients who have spent large sums and felt that they got no improvement. A lot of people like the newest, latest and greatest. Unfortunately in Plastic Surgery, these commonly disappear as quickly as they came. Innovation is great, and I am sure we will get there some day to be able to treat like “Bones” the doctor on Star Trek and wave a wand and presto all is perfected, but we are not close to that yet.
