Mommy Makeover surgery is an inclusive term for a combination of procedures designed to restore a woman’s body after childbirth. The female body changes significantly during pregnancy. Skin and muscles can stretch, fat may develop in unwanted places, breasts can begin to sag, and muscle definition may be lost. The Mommy Makeover can address the areas most affected by pregnancy with a single surgery to alleviate the need for multiple recovery periods and eliminate the additional costs associated with multiple surgeries.
Am I a Candidate for a Mommy Makeover?
Dr. Rosen recommends that you wait at least three months after having children before considering the Mommy Makeover. This will ensure that your body has recovered enough to withstand surgery while allowing the results to have a positive long-term effect. Women should be done breastfeeding.
The ideal Mommy Makeover candidate is within 10 to 15 pounds of her desired weight. Ideally, she should not have any medical conditions that could increase the risk of complications during the surgery or recovery. These conditions may include diabetes, obesity, hypertension, and more. Make your board-certified plastic surgeon aware of any medical conditions you have or medications you take that may affect the procedure. These factors may adjust which procedures may be performed. Patients should not smoke for six weeks before and after their surgery to allow for an effective recovery.
Although not a requirement, it is recommended that you hold off on this procedure if you are considering more children in the future, as any subsequent pregnancies will negatively affect your results.Schedule a Consultation
How Is a Mommy Makeover Performed?
The length of the Mommy Makeover surgery depends on the combination of procedures. Below you will find details on the various procedures available as part of your Mommy Makeover. During your consultation with Dr. Rosen, you will determine which of the procedures will meet your needs.
Breast augmentation surgery enhances the appearance of breasts that have lost volume due to pregnancy. Implants may be made of saline or silicone and usually placed under the muscle to look and feel more like your natural breasts. Incisions are usually closed with internal sutures. Dr. Rosen gives implant size recommendations based on the diameter of the breasts and the size of the abdomen and shoulders.
Breast augmentation can be combined with a breast lift to correct any breast drooping or sagging that may have resulted from pregnancy or breastfeeding.
Patients can undergo a breast reduction procedure to remove excess breast tissue and create balanced body proportions. Dr. Rosen performs breast reduction through either a lollipop or anchor incision, depending on the amount of reduction needed. For some patients, the breasts may be lifted to an aesthetically pleasing level, and excess sagging skin will be removed. Dr. Rosen makes breast size recommendations based on the size of the abdomen and shoulders.
Women can choose a breast lift in combination with breast augmentation or reduction to elevate sagging breasts following pregnancy and breastfeeding. Dr. Rosen performs breast lift surgery through periareolar, lollipop, or anchor incisions, depending on the amount of breast ptosis. This surgery will help to restore perkiness to the breasts.
Tummy tuck surgery is performed on the abdomen to restore youthful, toned contours. This procedure tightens underlying muscles, eliminates excess skin and stretch marks (located on the excised skin), and removes unwanted pockets of fat in the abdomen that can create a dimpled appearance. There are several tummy tuck variations available:
- A mini tummy tuck focuses on tightening the area below the belly button. This technique uses a smaller incision.
- A full tummy tuck addresses skin and muscle laxity both below and above the belly button.
- A modified tummy tuck addresses skin and muscle laxity below the belly button but also repairs the muscle layer above the belly button.
- A circumferential tummy tuck (also referred to as a lower body lift) includes tightening the abdomen, reducing love handles, lifting the buttock region, and slimming the thighs. This technique is ideal for patients with significant tissue laxity on the hips and thighs.
While liposuction is commonly combined with a tummy tuck, it can be performed alone if there is good skin elasticity on the abdomen. Liposuction can remove stubborn pockets of fat on the hips and thighs to reveal a sculpted physique.
Brazilian Butt Lift
The Brazilian Butt Lift takes the fat removed through liposuction of the abdomen, hips, or thighs, and uses it to augment and enhance the buttocks. This technique creates greater volume in the buttocks while slimming the hips and thighs.
What Is the Recovery for a Mommy Makeover?
Recovery time for a Mommy Makeover can vary depending on the procedures chosen. That said, certain generalities can be addressed. Immediately after the surgery, your incisions will be wrapped in compression garments, which will be worn for two to five days. A drain will be inserted during your surgery to eliminate excess fluid, and will likely be removed within five days (with minor variation depending on the healing process). After about two weeks, most patients will be ready to resume work and most daily activities. Vigorous exercise should be avoided if possible for six to eight weeks post-surgery.
Dr. Rosen does his best to reduce risks to the best degree possible. Even so, as with any surgical procedure, there are risks associated with a Mommy Makeover. These risks may include:
- Unfavorable scarring
- Poor reaction to anesthesia
- Capsular contracture (if breast implants are being used)
- Fat necrosis
- Nerve damage
What Are the Results
of a Mommy Makeover?
Results may not be immediately apparent after your recovery from surgery. Some results may take as long as six months to fully develop, while others may be visible immediately after the operation. For this reason, you should ensure that you understand what the results are likely to be before your surgery. Dr. Rosen and his staff will be happy to explain the possible results to you during your consultation.
What Is the Cost of a Mommy Makeover?
The cost of your Mommy Makeover will depend on multiple factors, such as the chosen combination of procedures, the techniques used, anesthesia costs, facility fees, and surgical fees. Dr. Rosen and his staff will provide you with an accurate cost estimate during your consultation. Financing may be available for some patients.
